Pros and Cons of Adjustable Gastric Banding

Before we talk about the pros and cons of adjustable gastric banding surgery, let’s talk about what it is and how it helps people lose weight.

In adjustable gastric banding surgery, the surgeon places a hollow band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch. This pouch has a narrow passage in it that leads to the remainder of your stomach.

The surgeon then attaches the tubing to an access port that is placed under your abdominal wall. From this access port, the surgeon can inflate the tubing with saline solution. Your surgeon will do this to adjust the band as needed. It can be loosened or tightened to change the size of the passageway, allowing a more “customized” approach to weight loss that my help minimize adverse side effects.

Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery Advantages

As compared to other bariatric surgeries, adjustable gastric banding is considered one of the least invasive. There is no stomach cutting or stapling, or rerouting of the intestine. The procedure is also reversible and the adjustable banding treatment is customized to each individual patient. Additionally, the band is adjustable to allow for the nutritional needs of a pregnant woman.

The adjustable gastric banding surgery has the lowest rate of complication and a lower risk of gallstones and malnutrition. The post-operative stay in the hospital is usually just overnight and patients often return to work within a week.

Potential Adjustable Gastric Banding Surgery

Adjustable gastric banding surgery patients typically see slower initial weight loss than patients of other types of weight loss surgeries. The band may also loosen and thus the pouch size increases, allow you to eat more. It is also critical for you to follow up with your physician after your procedure if you want to see optimal results.

As with any major surgery, there are risks with adjustable gastric banding. While the typical adjustable gastric banding patient will not have complications after surgery, it is important that you understand risk before undergoing surgery.  Talk to your surgeon or health care provider about any concerns you might have.
