Patient Success Stories
As a competitive athlete, Malden native and former minor league pitcher Keith Forbes is no stranger to regular visits to the hospital. Still, it wasn’t until he came to Hallmark Health’s innovative Bone & Joint Program that he found out what clinical excellence was truly all about.
Keith made 74 appearances with the San Diego Padres farm system during the 2000 season, but was sidelined after he tore the labrum, a muscle in the shoulder, in his pitching arm. He had surgery and went through rehabilitation, but never fully recovered from the injury.
Keith returned to Massachusetts and started his own business, using his knowledge of pitching mechanics to help young pitchers stay healthy and avoid injury. He began throwing regularly again and soon the pain in his pitching arm returned, eventually becoming constant.
That all changed when Keith was referred to Abraham Shurland, MD, a highly skilled orthopedic surgeon with the Hallmark Health Bone & Joint Program. Dr. Shurland performed a second surgery on Keith’s shoulder and now close to 10 years later he is growing his business and living his life pain free, even when throwing 90-mile an hour fastballs.
Looking back, Keith wishes Dr. Shurland could have performed the surgery after his initial injury, wondering if that would have given him more years as a player. Still, he is very appreciative of Dr. Shurland and Hallmark Health for helping him get back in the game.
“The difference between the two surgeries was night and day,” said Forbes, 33, who now lives in Newton. “Thanks to Dr. Shurland and Hallmark Health I’m back to doing what I love to do and couldn’t be happier.”
